Today I had an unpleasant exchanging with a woman at the Boston Animal Shelter.
She was behind the counter and I said,
'Hi, I drop off a volunteer application here two weeks ago, somebody was supposed to call me but I never got a phone call.'
She said, 'That’s because the director is away. He just had a baby and he won’t be back for a month.'
There was pause.
I said, I find it odd that you guys can’t move on without the director here. Especially if he is going to be out for six weeks.
'EXCUSE ME?!!' She said with a very irritated tone. As in 'How dare are you to challenge what I just said.'
Calmly I repeated. ‘I said that I find it odd that you guys can’t move on without the director here. Especially if he is going to be out for six weeks.
'WE CAN MOVE ON', She said with a lot of anger in her voice – and also in her eyes.
She said, ‘We have a lot of crazy people coming in here to volunteer, and we need to screen people. The director is the person who interview and screen these people. And he won't be here for another month.'
‘That’s exactly my point.’ I said.
There was another pause.
I finally said, ‘Look, you have my application. If you need a volunteer just give me a call. Thank you.'
She said ‘OKAY!’ with a lot of anger in her voice.
I turned around and left the shelter.
